The creatures of Larkspur Hollow are not pets. They are guardians, companions, mischief-makers, and deeply opinionated members of the forest—although some of them are more helpful than others.
Teine: The Fox
Brennan’s flame-tailed familiar is clever, fiercely loyal, and convinced that nearly every comfortable surface belongs to him. Teine communicates through impressions, emotions, and thoroughly judgmental stares—and he is not above singeing a rug when displeased.
He’s especially suspicious of anyone who threatens to claim Brennan’s attention. Unfortunately for Brennan, Teine is also perfectly capable of choosing favorites for himself.
Faolán: The Wolf
Despite his formidable size, Faolán is one of the gentlest guardians in the Hollow. Steady, patient, and deeply protective, he offers quiet companionship without demanding explanations.
Faolán is brave in the face of most dangers. Birds, however—particularly bold and vindictive magpies—are another matter entirely.
Dubhán: The Raven
Dubhán watches the Hollow from the highest branches, gathering secrets as readily as other ravens gather shining objects. Intelligent and solemn, he often appears to know what is happening before anyone else does.
Whether he intends to share that knowledge is a separate question. Dubhán prefers carefully timed croaks, meaningful silences, and leaving everyone else to interpret his warnings.
Púca: The Raccoon
Púca is a nimble-fingered menace with an irresistible fondness for buttons, ribbons, buckles, coins, and anything else that catches the light. No basket, pocket, or supposedly secure cupboard is beyond his reach.
His mischief is rarely malicious, although explaining that distinction to the victim of one of his thefts can prove difficult. Púca considers every unattended possession an invitation.
Cuan: The Owl
Quiet and watchful, Cuan carries the deep stillness of calm water beneath moonlight. He patrols the Hollow after dusk, gliding between the branches with scarcely a whisper.
Cuan is one of the forest’s most composed guardians, observing every argument and foolish decision with ancient patience. His disapproval requires no sound at all.
Líadan: The Hare
Líadan is swift, alert, and more perceptive than her delicate appearance suggests. She moves through the undergrowth like a pale flicker of moonlight, often sensing disturbances long before they reach the heart of the Grove.
Gentle does not mean timid. When the Hollow is threatened, Líadan’s courage proves every bit as fierce as that of the larger guardians.
Donnan: The Red Squirrel
Donnan is small, territorial, and prepared to defend his chosen branches against enemies of any size. His preferred weapons are acorns, which he hurls with alarming accuracy and absolutely no remorse.
He treats every interruption as a personal insult. Brennan has learned that arguing with him only encourages further bombardment.
